Iraqi forces assumed formal control of Baghdad and other cities on Tuesday after American troops handed over security in urban areas in a step toward ending the U.S. combat role in the country.

Freight train derails, explodes in Italy

Flames engulf the area early Tuesday where a freight train derailed and two cars filled with gas exploded just outside a station of Viareggio, in northern Italy.A rail car filled with liquefied natural gas exploded when a freight train derailed in the middle of a small Italian town, setting off an inferno that killed at least 10 people and injured 50 others.

Immigrants fighting to stay in U.S.

Angel Rodriguez holds his 4-month-old son Armando Miranda as shoppers look over items at his garage sale at his south Elkhart home. Rodriguez, his wife and two children are sleeping in one bedroom in a house they share with eight others. Rodriguez lost his job and his family’s trailer, forcing them to cut costs and sell many of their possessions.Immigrants, chiefly those here illegally, are particularly vulnerable as the recession lingers. Without proper documentation, those out of work can’t access unemployment and other government benefits, increasing the pressure to pull up stakes and look for opportunity elsewhere.

Madoff sentenced to 150 years

I know that doesn’t help you.” Bernard Madoff was sentenced Monday to 150 years in prison after apologizing to victims for a multibillion-dollar fraud scheme that the judge called “extraordinarily evil.”
